Hockey Bets: Winning Strokes

Hockey, one of the popular games, perhaps after cricket, has been in the limelight for sometime for its inherent potential to grow globally as a favourite game. With the gaining popularity of the game the world over, another growing trend that is apparent is betting on hockey matches. Betting on hockey games is rather similar to football. The 'puck-line', which is the counterpart of football's 'spread', is equally relevant to the game of hockey. However, hockey does not have 'touchdowns' and 'field goals' like football: the line remains the same for all games, which is set at 1.5 goals.

By rule of thumb, a team should win at least 1.5 goals (a victory margin of 2 goals) to qualify as a winner, allowing one to win bets. Technically, a puck-line is similar to a point spread wager. If a favourite hockey team secures -1.5, the teams then must secure at least 2 goals to win the bets. On the other hand, if the line of the underdog is +1.5, the team has to lose the games by 2 goals or less for securing to payout.

The other types of hockey bets include total bets, which are similar to puck-line bets. Normally, the total bets have 11/10 (-110) odds. Besides these types of bets, there are others such as 'over/under' bets. Under these bets, one needs to pick up the number of goals scored over or under the posted total in order to win.

Then there is the 'money-line' and 'parlay' hockey betting. The money-line betting is done on the lines of other sports, where one needs to play against the line straight up. In parlay betting, when more bets are put together into one parlay wager, the chances of odds are bigger. Although the payouts in the parlay bets are greater compared to others, all the games have to be won without a miss.
